Finding B.A.L.A.N.C.E in Multigenerational Living with Patricia Sheveland
How do we avoid burnout and find healing in our role as a family caregiver? Our worlds of caring for our children and also for our older adults are colliding. Oftentimes we are "sandwiched" between two generations we deeply love and care for.
It's time to look at our family structure and re-evaluate if "Living Life in the Middle" is a way of life for you!
Today, I interview Patricia Sheveland, best-selling author and certified life coach. She is living proof that you can find freedom, balance and flexibility in the multi-generational approach. This book gives us a new perspective of care and partnership. This book was full of practical tools to move forward in our caregiving journey. Thank you Pat for your unique story and the caring compassion in sharing it with all of us.
"Her newest book Living Life in the Middle: The Caregiver’s Guide to Healing, Hope and Harmony
Through Multigenerational Living provides the steps and tools to help caregivers create a life that provides freedom and flexibility to pursue their dreams while still supporting their family."
Pat and I talk about:
Pat has created B.A.L.A.N.C.E that walks people through their story to find healing. What BALANCE means?
How we go from feeling sandwiched to having deep gratitude in our situation?
What are those early challenges Pat had when her mom first came to live with her and how did she move through those?
So often I hear from caregivers that the wounds from childhood relationship with their parents show up in their caregiving and they have to work through that as well. What advice do you have for them on where to start the healing?
What are those rich blessings from living in a multigenerational home? And if someone is thinking about this- where should they start?
"Patricia (Pat) Sheveland has been in the healing profession since she was in her teens. She became a Registered Nurse after high school, beginning her career caring for patients in the hospital setting and ultimately transitioning into a very successful twenty-five-year career as a corporate executive in the medical and claim management field of workers compensation. In 2012, Pat began the reinvention of her life to pursue her dream of being a life coach and was certified by the International Coaching Federation in 2015.
Pat sees herself as a healing guide for mind, body, and spirit. She became certified as a Spring Forest Qigong teacher in 2017 and is a certified Funeral Officiant whose mission is to meet the needs of the family and to honor the life of the person who died when they are not affiliated with a particular church or religion. She also is a volunteer at Children’s Grief Connection, a non-profit organization providing grief camps for children and their families in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
As Pat stepped into her second half of life, she realized her soul purpose: to be a light for those who grieve. Since a very young age, Pat has been very comfortable holding the space of grief for others, especially with mothers who have experienced the death of a child. As a child born into a grieving family, Pat understands firsthand the impact long-term grief from the death of a child can have on a mother and the family as a whole. She began her journey as a coach for grieving mothers by helping her own mother find healing from sixty years of hidden grief after the death of her child. Since that time, many mothers have shared their stories and found purpose and joy in their lives with Pat’s compassionate guidance.
